From the Marsh to the Capitol: Talking Coastal Restoration in Baton Rouge

By Connor Gilbert

Last week, Vanishing Paradise joined partners from across Louisiana at Coastal Day at the Capitol, bringing together hunters, anglers, and community members to engage directly with lawmakers about the future of our coast. With more than 15 coastal organizations represented in Memorial Hall, the event created a valuable opportunity for the public to better understand the legislative process and the critical decisions behind funding coastal projects that impact communities across the state.

This year, CPRA presented a $1.5 billion FY27 annual plan that includes over 140 projects, with 70 of those already in construction. Throughout the day, attendees heard from state leaders, agency experts and restoration partners, all reinforcing the importance of transparency in how funds, including those from the Deepwater Horizon settlement, are spent. Information sessions and open conversations with legislators from across Louisiana bridged the gap between policymakers and the people who depend on the coast every day.

A major takeaway was the need for balance. While there is a notable increase in protection projects, restoration efforts must remain a priority to ensure long-term sustainability. Louisiana’s future depends on a multiple lines of defense approach that combines restoration, protection and community resilience to combat ongoing land loss and environmental challenges.

The reality is simple. If we do not protect and save what we have now, it will disappear faster than we can rebuild it. That urgency highlights why public engagement is so important.

The best part about the event is the opportunity to eat crawfish, local seafood and enjoy some refreshments with partners, friends and legislators. It’s in those moments of reflection and connection at the end of the day that the purpose behind the work becomes even clearer. Strengthening those relationships and reaffirming the shared commitment to protect coastal Louisiana truly brings us all together.

Coastal Day is not just an event, but also a reminder that informed voices, active participation, and continued transparency are key to preserving the habitats for wildlife and fisheries further highlighting the way of life that make Louisiana’s Sportsman’s Paradise worth fighting for.
